PhanCon is an annual international gathering of folks who flew, maintained, supported, photographed, tracked, modeled, or just plain enjoyed the sound of freedom promoted by this premier fighter of the 70's, 80's and 90's. Now celebrating over 50 years in action, the F-4 is still flying today in defense of many nations around the world, and while no longer on the front line in the US, she still serves an important role there too.
We get together to share stories, re-establish old friendships, examine memorabilia, and when possible view the F-4 in action. Our primary purpose is preserving the heritage of the F-4, and this PhanCon is just but one of the endeavors the F-4 Phantom II Society supports.
This year we are returning to one of our favorite spots, Tyndall AFB, FL. Our conference will be located at the Holiday Inn Select hotel in Panama Beach. On the schedule are of course visits to Tyndall and the F-4 and F-22 operations. One day we plan to head up Pensacola way and visit the base and museum there. We should again get to see F-4's in the air, hear the sound, and smell the JP-4. Great memories reawakened await you. Join us!
To cover transportation, meals, and facility rentals the conference fee this year will be $175. Members receive a special rate of $160. Membership must be current through Smoke Trails 18-4. Not sure if you are current? Please contact our administrator and ask him.
Hotel
We will soon have discount rates set up at our primary hotel, the Holiday Inn Select.
(4/24) Great news. It looks like the rate will be the same as back in 2006, $78! Use the link above to get the rate.
(9/8) Plenty of rooms left. If you don't see them available on the discount page please call the hotel. They say they will provide our special rate on other rooms, even though our reserved block might be full.
Note, by law all rooms are non-smoking. There should be smoking areas provided.
The address of the hotel may show up as 2001 N. MLK Blvd or 2001 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd in some literature and web links. Your GPS may only understand 2001 N. Cove Blvd, or just 2001 Cove Blvd, the address given on the hotel web site. As shown on Yahoo Maps..
Schedule
General gameplan is sign-in on Monday (noon on till 10PM), F-4 flightline and EOR at Tyndall on Tuesday, F-22 Operations on Tuesday, trip to Pensacola on Thursday with banquet that evening at hotel. Vendor and hospitality area will be open in the evenings. Lunches on Tuesday and Thursday and Banquet Thursday evening to be included. Hotel provides a free breakfast buffet for guests.
Detailed schedule is posted at end of this page.
Security Briefing
The mandatory security/procedures briefing will be given on the buses Tues AM.
PhanCon Registration
Because you will be visiting restricted areas you will be asked for personal information during the registration process to include your SSN or Passport, birthdate, actual residential address, etc. This information will be provided to the USAF authorities in advance of our visit. It will be kept private and not shared otherwise.
If you click on either of the "register now" buttons on this page you will be given the opportunity to create a personal account with EZregister. Doing so will let you later check the status of your registration. But, you do not need to do that. You may skip that step and go straight to the registration page. If you wish to register more than one individual just repeat the process for each individual.
General public registration is $175 for this event.
Current members receive a special rate of $160. Membership must be valid through Smoke Trails 18-4.
If you are not a member you can get the member rate by joining now or during registration. Or you may choose to attend and then join during PhanCon for $30, a savings of $10 off the regular member rate. You will save an additional $5 by joining before or during online registration.
Immediate family members may attend at the member rate. Guests still pay the non-member rate.
Payment may be made via Credit Card or a PayPal account via a PayPal secure payment. You may also elect to pay by check or money order if you register by the 13th of August. You will be emailed an invoice and the check must be received by 20 August or the registration may be cancelled.
Deadlines: We are required to provide base security a list of all non-US attendees by 3 Sept. Those registrations will close at 1 AM that date. US citizens will probably have ten more days after that with a cutoff at noon Sept 13th.
Those wishing to pay by check must register and send in their check so that it is received by Aug 20th.
We advise all to bring two forms of photo ID. If you are US Military or US Military Retired please bring that ID. Foreign nationals, please bring your Passport.
If you have any problems registering or paying please contact Registrations.
Vendors
If you wish to reserve a space or get more information please contact our Vendor Coordinator via this email address: Email Coordinator.
Airports/Rental Cars The "local" airport for Panama City has changed. In May they opened up Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport, unfortunately now a good hours drive away from the hotel. Alas that also means the hotel no longer provides limo service to and from. There is car rental, limo and taxi service available. Note: according to a local source if one leaves via the airport south exit and heads down to 388, and then east to 77 and then south the total mileage is about 20 miles, and can be done in under 30 min..
We have arranged a special rental car discount with AVIS good from Sep 13 through Sep 30th. Use Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) number J093902. One can call 1-800-331-1600 , or use this discount link.
The hotel says their guests have had good success using Yellow Cab to and from the airport ( 1-850-763-4691). For 3-4 folks taking a cab it is going to be about $50. If more and a shuttle is requested ahead of time, it should be $10 a head. One can call that number (toll free US) and make arrangements to have one available..
If you want to try to coordinate transport we offer this blog. http://phancon2010.blogspot.com/2010/08/welcome.html
Or as a member of the society you may use the private forum at http://groups.google.com/group/f4-phantom-soc/ to coordinate rides.
Planned Schedule of Events
This is our schedule for PhanCon 2010. As you can see it is packed.
Members last year asked for a half day off for personal exploration of the area and we are providing that Wed afternoon.
Sorry, the bus contract says no food and drinks allowed on the buses. We will have water available.
We fully expect there will be some minor changes as we get closer. Some things will not be confirmed by Tyndall until two weeks out.
