Absolute Beginning Watercolors
Thursdays, February 25 - March 31, 2016 1:30 - 3:30 pm
This class is for those with little or absolutely no experience as an artist or as a watercolor painter. Each week we will paint a different subject, with instruction on materials, composition, color choice, and a variety of techniques and styles. The paintings will progress from simple to more complex, and with student’s own designs by the last class.
Most weeks, a new pigment or two will be introduced and students will practice mixing new colors with them, learning each color's peculiarities. Students will either draw (with assistance when needed) simple sketches, or transfer provided sketches to their paper; then they will watch step-by-step demos and paint together. We begin with fruit still life; tree trunks and branches; foliage in a landscape; rocks; flowers; and a class on composition. At the end, each student will mat one of his completed paintings.
Materials List:
• Two sheets of Arches (only Arches) 140lb cold-press watercolor paper (available at Hobby Lobby or Michael’s---go online for coupons!) Cut into fourths, approx. 11x15”. Or, you may prefer to purchase online, at Dick Blick or other outlets.
• One drawing board will be provided.
• Regular masking tape, at least 3/4 inch; one inch is better.
• A small pad of watercolor paper, spiral bound, for practice and notes.
• Inexpensive plastic palette in a plastic bag ($1.00 or so); try to find one with at least 8 wells, and you will prefer the ones with lids but they’re not required.
• Bring paint tubes you may have on hand. Do not buy any. The instructor will provide some, and help you decide what to purchase later.
• Same with brushes—bring any short handled, soft bristled brushes you may already have. We will need medium to large sizes, both flat and pointed rounds. As we go along, you will decide what kind to purchase.
• Paper towels and/or rags
• Water container and water mister
• Drawing pencils (soft 2B, 3B or 4B please) and eraser (kneaded is best). A ruler may be helpful. Staedtler pencils are best, available at PU bookstores or online.
