Honolulu, HI 96822
Theme: Hoʻāla Hou I Huliau
(To reawaken within so that a meaningful transformation can take place)
Location: Pagoda Hotel, 1525 Rycroft Street, Honolulu
Keynote Speaker: This year’s keynote address will be from the Pū‘ā Foundation, which was established in 1996 as part of the UCC’s apology and redress in 1993 to Native Hawaiians for the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom a hundred years earlier. The purpose of the Pū‘ā Foundation is to help the community move beyond the anger related to the overthrow toward healing and transformation. Pū‘ā has been studying the effects of this historical trauma with female prisoners in Hawai‘i. Executive Director Toni Bissen and her staff, along with current and former women prisoners, will share how Pū‘ā has helped women use storytelling as a way to bring healing and transformation to break the cycle of poverty and imprisonment. Pū‘ā hopes that its model will enable individuals and churches to create transformation in their own families, churches and communities.
Youth/Young Adult Delegates and `Aha Youth Event: Each church is eligible to send a Youth/Young Adult delegate, thirty years of age or younger, to the ‘Aha Makua. Churches are also encouraged to send Youth/Young Adult visitors to the ‘Aha with their delegates.
All youth (having completed sixth grade through high school) are invited to participate in an ‘Aha Youth Event, which will be held as part of the ‘Aha schedule. The youth program will begin late morning on Thursday, June 11, and conclude at the close of the ‘Aha Makua on Saturday, June 13. Neighbor Island youth registering for the youth event should not make separate housing reservations. A block of rooms for the youth will be reserved at the Pagoda Hotel and youth will be billed separately. Youth from O‘ahu can choose to stay at the hotel or they can arrange their own transportation to and from the hotel each day. Additional information will be sent to registered youth.
