This workshop will consider the incidence, assessment and treatment of distressed couples and the impact on their children. A Case Conceptualization Model of risk and protective factors that informs assessment and treatment decision-making will be presented. In many instances, such marital distress escalates into Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). Ways to predict the Violence Potential of Prospective Partners will be discussed. How to implement the Core Tasks of Psychotherapy with victims of IPV and ways to bolster resilience will be demonstrated. How to address the exacerbating factors such as Substance Abuse Disorders and PTSD will be discussed as part of the treatment of distressed couples and families, while respecting culture.
