EMT-A Emergency Medical Technician- Advanced
Schedule
The lecture and skill portion of the class will meet on a shift based schedule. The student will be responsible for attending class on either Tuesday or Wednesday and then again on either Thursday or Friday. This will allow for the student to maintain employment in EMS with either traditional 24\48 schedules or long week-short week 12 hour schedules and still be able to complete the course without missing work. The class meets from 1800-2200. The student will also be responsible for scheduling 5 12 hour shifts on an ambulance and 5 shifts in a nonambulance setting in addition to the classroom and skills experience.
Purpose
The primary focus of the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is to provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system. All students enrolled in the course will complete it with PALS, ACLS, and PHTLS.
Prerequisite Requirements
Students must be 18 years of age to take EMT courses. Students enrolled in the EMT-A program must have their NREMT prior to enrolling in the course (exceptions to this may be made at the program director’s discretion for students who have their initial NREMT test scheduled during the EMT-A enrollment period or early in the class. Students enrolled in EMT programs are required to have a tuberculin test, measles and rubella vaccinations, and hepatitis B vaccinations (or sign a waiver). Once admitted into the program, students are required to carry their own health insurance (or sign a waiver), submit to a drug test and criminal background check, and provide proof of mandatory immunizations
Course Requirements
The course will consist of 200 hours of classroom lecture/on line study and skills and 60 hours of non ambulance clinical (examples may include E.R., OB, Primary Care or Pediatric) and 60 hours of ambulance internship.
