Single Session Therapy: Theory and Practice
Solution Focused Brief Therapy is a simple craft which has been taught to and practiced by children as young as twelve. It is also a revolutionary approach to therapeutic practice which has debunked almost every sacred cow of the counselling and therapy world and fundamentally challenged the long-standing rule of the medical model. There is no longer serious doubt that it works and works as well as any other model but it is such an upset to the status quo that those who hold the power and the purse strings are understandably reluctant to open their doors to its ‘official’ use. So, as one of its key founders, Steve de Shazer hoped, it has been more of an underground movement but one that has spread like a virus to tens of thousands of practitioners throughout the world. And one of its key centres is here in Texas where some of the most influential practitioners, teachers and authors live and work.
In this workshop you will
· experience some of the wonders of this remarkable approach
· appreciate in practice and in theory how single-session change is not so remarkable
· scratch your head to make sense of some of the leading philosophical and psychological theories that might help us understand what we do
· develop skills to make your own practice briefer
· be even more attuned to your own loved-ones
· enjoy yourself!
Chris Iveson is co-founder (with Evan George and Harvey Ratner) of BRIEF, the London-based centre responsible for many of the developments of Solution Focused Brief Therapy over the past twenty years. Chris is a former social worker and family therapist, author and co-author of many books and articles about Solution Focused Brief Therapy, and well known throughout the Solution Focused world for his clear thinking and articulation of the theory and practice of Solution Focused Brief Therapy. If you have questions about the workshop before you sign up or if you have already signed up and would like Chris to cover a particular issue or answer a specific question just mail him at chrisiveson@brief.org.uk He likes mail!
