Auditions, Round One
Friday, February 5, 2021, 6-9pm
Romeo and Juliet 1921
Romeo and Juliet 1921 is set in New York City in the golden age of flappers and gangsters, bootlegging, and Prohibition. Two households, both alike in dignity (if not pizazz!), compete to see whether liquor and lasciviousness or teetotaling and temperance will rule the (black and white) streets of uptown Verona.
We are seeking a diverse group of actors of all ages, gender expressions, races, and ethnicities. Unless otherwise specified, characters can be any gender. (Regardless, characters can be PLAYED by any gender.) Because this is a virtual production, be prepared to bring your top-notch voice acting and character-switching abilities!
Auditions will be held on Zoom from 6pm-9pm on Friday, February 5 and Saturday, February 6, with callbacks as needed on Sunday, February 7. We will be using the Folger Shakespeare Library edition of the play, which may be found here:
https://shakespeare.folger.edu/downloads/pdf/romeo-and-juliet_PDF_FolgerShakespeare.pdf
(Actors will receive hard copies once cast.) Have the PDF with you at auditions, as we’ll be reading scenes from it.
Please prepare two short monologues of two very different characters from any of Shakespeare’s plays (including this one).
Rehearsals will be held weekday evenings after 6:00 PM and weekend days before 5:00 PM on Zoom. Tech week will start Saturday, March 20.
Romeo and Juliet 1921 will be a live, virtual event that will ‘air’ for 3 nights, March 26, 27, 28. It will also be recorded so that ticket holders can watch the performance at their leisure.
Please fill out the audition form prior to your audition.

(All characters will double with other roles. Only the main roles are listed here.)
ROMEO: female, to play late teens. The idealistic, passionate, lesbian daughter of uptight, strictly religious teetolaters. In a different world, she would have been a romantic poet, but she’s trapped in the violent world of Verona, torn between love and loyalty and careening toward a fate she can’t escape from.
JULIET: female, to play late teens. We are particularly interested in casting an actor of color in this role. A strong-willed, courageous ‘new woman’ of the 1920s who embraces a lifestyle that many at the time considered immoral or outrageous. Probably a flapper, definitely looking for love and freedom on her own terms.
LORD CAPULET: male. A violent, hard-headed mafioso type. The most successful bootlegger in New York, and proud of that fact. Is never wrong. Rules by fear and intimidation. His marriage to Lady Capulet is strained and ugly, but they both attempt to put on a (not very good) public face.
LADY CAPULET: female. Fickle, vain, and proud. Married and had a child far too young. (Probably married to avoid scandal.) Probably wishes she, too, could be a ‘new woman’, but is trapped in a miserable, violent marriage. Does enjoy the money and status that comes with it though.
NURSE: Warm, cheerful and foolish, with excellent comedic timing. Is Juliet’s parental figure in every way that really counts and has a loving, affectionate, and close relationship with her. Wants the very best for Juliet, but goes about it in every wrong way.
FRIAR LAWRENCE: Has an excellent command of wordplay and language. A priest/nun who has seen too much and would rather dabble with exotic herbs, but attempts to brook the peace all the same. Too bad they have terrible decision making skills. Has a warm, affectionate relationship with Romeo, even if s/he expects the girl is a bit… off.
MERCUTIO: Sexually charged, passionate, and charismatic. S/he and Romeo go way back, which is why they’re still friends now. A witty, charming, hot-headed troublemaker who’d rather drink and carouse than deal with Romeo’s newest romantic fixation. Might have a thing for Tybalt.
TYBALT: Vain, hot-headed, and knows how to hold a grudge. Juliet’s moody, stubborn cousin, obsessed with family image and pride. Might have a thing for Mercutio.
BENVOLIO: Level-headed, concerned with keeping the peace, but easily swayed. Romeo’s upright, teetotaling cousin who nonetheless gets pulled (willingly) into Mercutio’s antics.
ESCALUS: The mayor of New York City, and thus Verona. Has turned a blind eye to the bootlegging and religious strife, because it has been profitable, but one too many incidents has finally pushed them to the edge.
PARIS: male. A fabulously wealthy, charming pretty boy type (think Jay Gatsby) who can’t possibly imagine why Juliet wouldn’t be interested in him. After all, he’s just so gosh-darn nice, old sport.
