In recognition of May as Foster Care Awareness Month, the Child Welfare Court Improvement Project and the Lived Experience Advisory Group (LEAG) for Child Welfare and Family Court Practices is hosting a one-hour program to highlight the voices of people impacted by the child welfare and legal system, especially the voices of youth who have experienced a foster care placement. There will be a welcome address by Deputy Chief Administrative Judge for Justice Initiatives, Edwina G. Richardson, following by an inspiring introduction to our program by Sixto Cancel, the Founder and CEO of Think of Us, which strives for systematic changes in child welfare so that the youth and families most impacted by the system have the greatest power to reshape it. You will then hear from a panel of multidisciplinary professionals in the field, moderated by professionals in the field who are also people with lived experience, asking about best practices by role to ensure that children in care are safe and protected, have their needs met, have their voices heard, and are valued by all who work in the system. You will also hear directly from youth that are currently in foster care about their experience of the system and the ways you can best help them and their loved ones. This is a multidisciplinary training offered to judges, attorneys, social service professionals, community providers, and people with lived experience in the child welfare and legal/judicial system across NYS. Participants will become more trauma aware and learn best practices and skills to help children, parents, and their families in the system.
