Thank you for your interest in the ASCLS-CO Fall seminar. Due to how few registrants we had, we have pivoted to instead having 2 sessions virtually, at no charge. If you are interested in attending these sessions, please fill out the google form here: https://forms.gle/SteNWEm4stwxKu3X7
Schedule:
9:00am - 10:00am Session 1 - A Tale of Two Blood Banks: Lessons learned during a DCLS residency, Hayley Vinchattle, MLS(ASCP)CM
1.0 Contact hour Subject Area: Immunohematology
Level of Instruction: Basic
A series of blood bank case studies that highlight
the the benefit a DCLS can bring with regards to transfusion medicine.
Program Objectives:
- Identify the role of a DCLS as a transfusion
utilization liason between the patient bedside and the laboratory. - Discuss the benefit of a DCLS for clear communication
when transferring patients with clinically significant transfusion
requirements to other facilities - Recognize how a DCLS can provide clinical context for
blood bank test results and the implications they may have on a patient’s
transfusion plan.
10:30am - 11:30am Session 2 - Positive Does Not Always Mean Infection, Douglas Aroca, MLS(ASCP)CM, SHCM
1.0 Contact hour Subject Area: Microbiology
Level of Instruction: Intermediate
This session will review four clinical cases that dive into the interpretation of microbiology results compared to that of the patient clinical presentation. The cases include evaluation limitations, differences between infection and colonization, laboratory interventions that lead to improved diagnostic accuracy, antimicrobial stewardship, and patient care.
Program Objectives:
- Interpret microbiology results alongside the patient clinical findings to differentiate an active infection from a colonization or contamination.
- Evaluate the clinical significance of positive microbiology results for opportunities to recommend additional testing and antimicrobial stewardship.
- Recommend laboratory-led, evidence-based interventions that support utilization, diagnostic accuracy, and optimizes patient care.
ASCLS-Colorado is approved as a provider of continuing education programs in the clinical laboratory sciences by the ASCLS P.A.C.E. ® Program.
