Workshop Session I:
Good Governance Fundamentals: Don Clark
Explore the roles and responsibilities of governing boards and their members, including the importance of a timely mission statement, the business judgment rule and personal financial commitments, managing conflicts of interest, and fulfilling the legal duties of care, loyalty, and obedience. Examples of basic policies for governing bodies of church settings will be discussed.
Church as Employer/Small Business: David Avison & Greg Sato
With the exception of hiring clergy, courts and bureaucrats feel free to treat churches like any other small employer and business they oversee. This workshop will be based on the recent UCC Insurance Board publication, Your Church: Employer & Small Business. This will be a general “heads-up” seminar to help church trustees, officers and other council members avoid problems.
Federal & State Tax Traps for Churches: Ray Kamikawa
Do you think your church is tax exempt? Maybe not. This workshop will explore Federal and State tax traps for churches, including inurement, private benefit, unrelated business income tax, Hawaii general excise tax, registration and filing responsibility, and related penalties.
Stewardship and Planned Giving: Taking Care of What Belongs to God: Diane Weible
This workshop will provide resources and conversation about how to share with members of your congregation the important message of what it means to be stewards of all that God has entrusted to us. This includes conversation around planned giving, offering, tithes, pledging and attitudes about money.
Workshop Session II:
Managing Church Conflicts: Rick Walters
Explore constructive strategies for managing church conflict and transition which are culturally sensitive, consistent with the preservation and development of healthy congregations, and responsive to the deep emotions and traditions of congregants. Learn about resources available to congregations and areas to be aware of when walking the minefields of church conflict. Active participation and contribution are encouraged.
Protecting Church Property and People: Andy Bunn, Greg Sato
Leases, Licenses, Use Agreements & Safe Church Policies
This workshop will survey some of the problems churches have with respect to the use of church property and conducting business with outside parties, and emphasize the importance of documenting agreements for the use of church property and adopting policies to protect property and people, including what are known as “safe church” policies.
Church Insurance and the “Duty of Care”: Cathy Green
Explore the risks your church faces, how to prevent financial and reputational loss, and help you understand your insurance protection. Governing boards share a “duty of care” to protect church assets, income producing operations and reputation by the most efficient means. We will explore the role of insurance in the risk management “big picture”, the variety of special insurance needs and challenges for churches. We will examine the complimentary roles of risk avoidance, risk transfer, risk minimization and risk mitigation.
The Exception to 'Extravagant Welcome': Mike McKee
Steeple-Jackers and other Mischief Makers in the UCC Church Family
This presentation will focus on structuring congregational life to best identify and isolate persons intent upon disaffiliating the church, and taking its property, from the United Church of Christ. Persons interested in this topic may want to read "Steeplejacking: How the Christian Right is Hijacking Mainstream Religion" by the Revs. Sheldon Culver and John Dorhauer prior to the event. The book is available on Amazon.com.
