The Hawai`i Island Association
is once again inviting all clergy to the
Hawai`i Conference Clergy Retreat
Program
The theme for this year’s clergy retreat will be “Re-visioning Ancient Practices: Almsgiving, Prayer, Fasting.” Our retreat leader will be John Indermark, author, UCC minister, and visiting associate at Church of the Holy Cross. The Rev. Indermark has provided this description of our time together:
In Matthew 6:1-18, Jesus brings fresh vision to three practices long identified with Judaism’s faith and piety. Our time together will blend exploring the traditions surrounding these spiritual practices that Jesus re-visioned in tandem with seeking fresh perspectives on how these practices might take new or renewed form in our lives and churches today. In particular, we will consider the connection between almsgiving and “connective” community, prayer and “honest to God” communication, and fasting and transformative discipleship.
This theme will be explored in a variety of ways. Worship that opens and closes our time together, as well as various points in between, will keep us mindful that we do not gather unto ourselves alone. The Rev. Indermark will offer presentations on the material, accompanied by question and answer opportunities, small group discussions and exercises, and opportunities for reflective silence and artistic expression.
This is a great opportunity for Hawai`i Conference pastors to reflect on the practice of ministry, gain insight and ideas for the future, and find time to relax and be together.
About John Indermark
The Rev. John Indermark grew up in St. Louis and was nurtured in the faith at Salvator Evangelical and Reformed Church. He received a B.A. in history from St. Louis University and an M.Div. from Eden Seminary. For the first 16 years of his ministry, he served in full-time parish ministry in Washington state. Since 1992, while doing occasional interim and extended pulpit supply positions, John began a ministry of the written word, including Christian education curricula (Seasons of the Spirit, The Present Word, New International Lesson Annual and others) and spiritual formation books. He and his son, Jeff, have co-written two books for young adult ministry, and with a colleague he recently finished the draft of an Advent book tentatively entitled Advent A to Z, scheduled for publication this fall. John and his wife, Judy, live in Naselle, Washington, and in their spare time, they enjoy walking their region’s trails and logging roads, traveling in the Southwest and British Columbia, and snorkeling in Hawai`i.
Register no later than Friday, February 1, 2013.
